This week marked a truly special moment in the life of Burton Hathow, as the Upper School took to the stage for the very first time with their debut production of The Lady and The Mouse, an original play written by our very own Mr Nowell.

Set in medieval Lincoln, the play follows the gripping and inspiring story of Nichola de la Haye, a woman of remarkable strength and resilience who played a crucial role in defending Lincoln Castle during the 13th century. Mr Nowell’s script brought this little-known historical figure to life with sensitivity, depth and just the right amount of humour.
Our pupils rose to the occasion magnificently. Every child took to the stage with confidence and purpose, delivering lines with clarity and conviction, and embodying their characters with maturity beyond their years. It was a joy to see their enthusiasm, teamwork and creativity shine through in every scene.
A particular highlight of the performance was the inclusion of original songs, written specially for the production. These moving musical moments added real emotional depth to the story, and the pupils performed them beautifully. The soloists sang with poise and heart, while the ensemble numbers brought a powerful sense of unity and atmosphere to the stage.
What made this production all the more impressive was the collaborative spirit behind it. From the haunting lighting and atmospheric soundscapes to the thoughtful costume choices and carefully crafted set, every detail was handled with care. Behind the scenes, staff and families worked tirelessly to ensure the production ran smoothly, proving that it takes a village to bring a story to life.
This performance was more than just a school play; it was a celebration of storytelling, community and the confidence that grows when children are given the chance to step into the spotlight.
A heartfelt thank you to Mr Nowell for writing such a powerful and poignant script, and to everyone who helped make this production a resounding success.
