At Burton Hathow, outdoor learning is far more than simply taking lessons outside. It is about creating meaningful experiences that deepen understanding, build responsibility and encourage children to connect with the world around them. Across the school, pupils are benefitting from hands-on opportunities that bring learning to life in exciting and memorable ways.

In Nursery and Reception, our youngest children have been exploring nature through beautiful dandelion art. Using natural materials collected from the school grounds, the children have developed their creativity, fine motor skills and observation skills whilst enjoying time outdoors. Reception children have also been making excellent use of their outdoor provision, particularly the mud kitchen, where imaginative play, communication and collaboration flourish naturally. These experiences help children to build confidence, curiosity and independence through purposeful play.

Meanwhile, Year 2 have been taking their maths learning outside by using playground chalk to support their understanding of fractions. By drawing, sharing and representing fractions practically on a larger scale, pupils have been able to visualise concepts more clearly whilst staying active and engaged. Outdoor learning often allows children to approach subjects from a different perspective, helping to improve both confidence and retention.

Our Lower School pupils have embraced the responsibility of caring for the potatoes they planted earlier this term. Each day, children eagerly water and monitor their growing plants, learning valuable lessons about patience, teamwork and sustainability along the way. Excitement is already building ahead of the potato harvest in June, when pupils will be able to enjoy the rewards of their hard work and care.

Children across the school have been busy preparing for Sports Day, with a particular focus on developing their running skills and stamina. During practice sessions, pupils have been working hard on their sprinting, pacing and relay techniques, showing great determination and enthusiasm throughout.

In Upper School, pupils have been taking real ownership of their environment by developing the area around our sleeper plant beds. Their work is helping to create a welcoming entrance to our forest area whilst also encouraging stewardship and pride in the school grounds. Through projects such as this, children learn that they can make a positive and lasting contribution to their community.

Outdoor learning provides countless benefits for children of all ages. It promotes wellbeing, encourages collaboration, develops problem-solving skills and often inspires greater enthusiasm for learning. Most importantly, it helps children make meaningful connections between the classroom and the real world.
At Burton Hathow, we are proud to ensure that outdoor learning is purposeful, engaging and enriching.
