The Year 3-6 students have recently investigated Black History Month, with a particular focus on Walter Tull – former professional footballer and the first British Army Officer of Afro-Caribbean descent. The students learned how he was forced to leave Tottenham Hotspur in 1911 due to racism but resolutely went on to star for Northampton Town before joining the war effort in 1914. As a black man, his rise to the rank of Officer broke British military rules at the time but he eventually led soldiers on several important missions in Italy. Walter Tull died aged 29 during the Battle of the Somme, towards the very end of World War I. The students also took part in a whole-school assembly to celebrate the importance of Black History Month.
