What an amazing year Reception have had.
The children started the year talking about their own families, bringing in baby photographs that led to lots of discussion and created self portraits using a range of mediums. They made family trees and learnt about lots of different families and a range of cultures. They discovered what it is like to live with a disability and think about the needs of others.
Visits have included Mrs Phull, talking about nursing, Mr Walker and his dentist team and Mr Lyndon-Smith with his flying suit and helmet talking about what it is like to be a pilot. Stanley came in for a bath and even Woody came for an afternoon, where the children took him for a walk and learnt how to care for him. Outside the children have made giant nature skeletons, provided bird feeders for winter birds and looked at habitats. Lots of fun making clay faces and making up their own games, map reading and following clues to find treasure. Planting and making nature paint brushes during work on the Stone Age was very popular as was pond dipping, along with a great time paddling in Hathow’s lake. They have trip trapped over the bridge, looking out for the troll, made houses for the three little pigs before acting out the story and made story maps. Planting sunflowers and cornflowers during outdoor learning days to show our support of Ukraine and looking after the school grounds has kept them very busy.
The children have celebrated Diwali, making mandalas and our own versions of henna handprints using mud! A dragon dance was created during Chinese New Year and the children sampled food and wrote about the year they were born in. A highlight this year was the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and so many activities took place in the reception classroom.
The children have focused on the wheel this term and researched a range of vehicles, comparing old and new trains and cars. They conducted a traffic survey down by the cafe and considered sharing vehicles to help with carbon zero day.
The group have been amazing, astounding us with their artistic skills, fantastic reading and superb writing development which has seen them all work as hard as they could.
We wish them all a wonderful summer break. They have certainly earned it.
